Vmware tools not running not installed

I've run into an issue I can't quite figure out. I use Nakivo to backup a Win VM and upon checking the logs I've recently noticed there is an error. Nakivo is telling me for the VM in question:. The VM will be processed without quiescing. So I tried to manually take the snapshot and, sure enough, I get a failure immediately from within vCenter Server that the VM cannot be Quiesced.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing VMware tools for the VM and it doesn't fix the issue. Any ideas? This is the only Windows based VM I have running. The rest are Linux so I'm having no issues with those.

I'm kinda "stuck" here and don't really know why VMware tools is installed but not running You can check for that:. If the Tools packages are gone, then yes, installing the Tools is a task that's going to fail every time! Glad we cleared that up. But you can copy them to where they're supposed to be.

If I attempt to restart via services. Errorcould not stop in a timely fashion". I'll go check. Is there any place in particular that VMware tools would be located within Event Viewer? I can offer this. Some backup solutions have their own agents that install on the Windows OS of the Guest systems. A lot of these conflict with the snapshot provider that VMtools uses. In the past I have had to re-run the VMware tools setup and deselect the VMware snapshot provider to get backups to start working again.

Do you know if your backup solution uses its own agent or VMWare's snapshot provider? When you did the VMware tools reinstall, did you reboot the server after removing it but before reinstalling it? If not, I'd try that first. Your above error when trying to restart the service seems to suggest that the server might be busy doing something else and cannot even stop the service within the timeout period. Is any other process or service using a lot of resources?

Chad - Nakivo didn't install anything to the guest VM. I'm using the Nakivo Virtual Appliance that has both the transporter and director built right into the appliance. Thanks for that information though! I'm stumped.

This is something that just started happening about a month ago on a guest VM that has been running perfectly for over a year. This VM is only being used for my IP cam recording software. So it's heavily underutilized. Only writing about 2.

The server rebooted on it's own but I never saw it reboot twice. I was nervous after the 1st reboot as everything looked successful and it was.

I haven't forced a second reboot and everything is running fine. It did not take long. So far so good.If i try to reinstall the tools on the guest it's detecting a previous installation and wants to run a repair. Additionally, VMX nics start working after tools are installed, however the host does not detect the installation.

I would restart the management agents on the affected host s to see if this solved it, otherwise report back and we can take another look. I took the host to 6. That's great. As part of the upgrade, the agents will be restarted to it's possibly that this fixed it. Error: You don't have JavaScript enabled. I ended up having to log out of vcenter and log back in again before the vmware tools error went away. This was still the case for me with new servers and latest versions of vSphere 6.
